Frequently Asked Questions

NPS (National Pension System) is a government-sponsored retirement savings scheme. You contribute monthly, choose asset allocation (equity/debt/govt bonds), and at retirement (60), use minimum 40% for annuity (monthly pension) and withdraw up to 60% as lumpsum.

NPS offers triple tax benefit: 1) Up to ₹1.5L under 80CCD(1) within 80C, 2) Additional ₹50,000 under 80CCD(1B), 3) Employer contribution up to 10%/14% under 80CCD(2). At maturity, 60% lumpsum is tax-free.

Minimum contribution is ₹500 per contribution and ₹1,000 per year for Tier I. There's no upper limit. For Tier II (optional), minimum is ₹250 per contribution with no annual minimum.

Partial withdrawal (up to 25% of own contribution) is allowed after 3 years for specific purposes like education, marriage, home purchase, or medical treatment. Early exit before 60 requires 80% annuity purchase.

NPS returns depend on asset allocation and market performance. Historically, equity funds have given 12-14%, corporate bonds 9-11%, and government securities 8-10%. Aggressive allocation suits younger investors.
